Motor oil viscosity means how easily oil flows at what temperature. You also can find the correct motor oil grade for your engine in your vehicle’s owner manual. It’s best to start there if you’re wondering what oil to pick. However, if you are constantly driving in lower, freezing temperatures and your car is slow to start, you may need to change your motor oil grade to one that’s better for cold temperatures.

Motor oil grades typically appear as 5W-30 for lower temperatures. The “5” is a measurement of viscosity at zero degrees Fahrenheit, so at lower temperatures. However, the number after the “W-” stands for how thick the oil is at 100 degrees Celsius or very hot temperatures. A 15W-40 is a highly viscous motor oil that’s best for engines always driving in hotter climates.
