Transmissions are machines located at the power transmission system. They are installed to provide a controlled application of power. They are often referred as the gearboxes. They use the gear and gear trains to allow torque and speed conversion from transmitting source of power to a different device.

Manual Transmissions
They allow the driver to manually select the gears using movable gear selectors and driver-operated clutches. The transmissions are also referred to as standard or stick shift transmissions.

Automated Manual Transmissions
They use the Mechanical Clutch. The driver does not control the clutch action. Instead, they use electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic controls. They are also known as direct-shift gearboxes.

Automatic transmission
They automatically use the torque converter, clutches, and planetary gear-set to shift through the vehicles' forward gear. Some automatics let drivers control the upshifts and downshift using the buttons and pedals on the steering wheel and gear selectors.

Continuous Variable Transmission
They offer continuous drive ration using sensors, belts, and pulleys instead of gears. They help maintain a balanced acceleration curve without stopping to change gears. They help keep engines at optimum power range and increase efficiency and gas mileage.
